Description
When gazing at the scenery from a train window, I am sometimes struck by the realization that people live even in places like these. In Japan, the settings of daily life—residential neighborhoods, farmland, and industrial facilities—extend from coastlines across plains and into mountainous regions, while the changing seasons lend these landscapes a layered richness.
Every subject vanishes the moment it passes by, yet each is a trace of people who assuredly existed, even though we will never meet them. These fleeting thoughts, which I would ordinarily forget once they had rushed past, were deepened by how the pandemic made connection between people so difficult.
Photographing from a moving train introduces blur into the frame, giving more lyrical expression to the transient nature of passing away.

列車の窓から景色を眺めていると、こんなところにも人の暮らしがあるのかと驚くことがあります。日本では、住宅街や農地、工業施設といった生活の場が、海岸線から平地、山岳地帯へと広がり、季節の変化がその景色に重層的な魅力を与えています。
すべての被写体は通り過ぎた瞬間に消え去りますが、会うことはないものの確実に存在していた人々の痕跡です。
普段は走り去った後に忘れてしまうであろう些細な考えは、パンデミックにより人とのつながりが困難になったことで強化されていきました。
走る列車からの撮影は画面にブレを生じさせ、過ぎ去るという一時的な性格がより叙情的に表現されています。

Catching Mount Fuji -from a series of flowing scenery
Description
While the Tokaido Shinkansen travels through Shizuoka Prefecture, Mount Fuji can be seen from the window.
On those miraculous occasions when we are granted a view of it, not only the tourists but even those who had until then been working at their seats will—if only for this moment—reach to capture its figure with their cameras.
The Mount Fuji seen from the train window rises behind the settings of our daily lives: houses, shops, factories, and fields. We know the beautifully rendered Mount Fuji through masterpieces of painting and photography, yet it is precisely this Mount Fuji—glimpsed in fragments amid our daily travels—that is the Mount Fuji etched into the shared memory of so many Japanese people.
As one of those people myself, I record this passing scenery, an experience made possible precisely because one is aboard the Shinkansen moving at high speed.

東海道新幹線が静岡県内を走行中、車窓から富士山を目にすることができます。
奇跡的に拝むことができた時、観光客はもちろん、それまで車内で仕事をしていた人でさえ、この時ばかりはとその姿をカメラに収めようとします。
車窓から望む富士山は、住宅・店舗・工場・畑といった私たちの暮らしの背後にそびえています。美しく描かれた富士山を私たちは絵画や写真の名作を通して知っていますが、このように日々の移動の中で断片的に見える富士山こそ、多くの日本人の共通の記憶に刻み込まれた富士山の姿です。
私もそのひとりとして、高速で移動する新幹線の中だからこそ体験できる、この過ぎ去る景色を記録しています。
