How do you express, in a photograph, that there is a great deal of something?
Japan is said to have a great many vending machines. But when you take a single photograph in which a vending machine appears and add the statement above as a caption, is the photograph really able to demonstrate that fact?
To convey abundance through photography, there is no other way than to shoot a great many and show them. "Vending Machines"series is a project of continuously photographing the vending machines of a certain soft-drink manufacturer, found all across Japan. It began in 2001, and to date has captured 5,000 vending machines.

何かがたくさんあることを写真で表現するには？
日本にはたくさんの自動販売機があると言われています。ところで、自動販売機が写った1枚の写真に先ほどの説明をキャプションとして加えたとき、写真は本当にその事実を示せているのでしょうか？ たくさんあることを写真で伝えるには、たくさん撮って見せるほかありません。
Vending Machinesシリーズは、日本全国で見つけた某清涼飲料水メーカーの自動販売機を撮り続けるプロジェクトです。2001年に開始され、現在5000機の自動販売機を撮影してきました。
